Located in Dumalag, Capiz, this project features reclaimed Narra wood from the clients ancestral home, meticulously designed by Arch. Erl John and brought to life by the KAHA team led by Arch. Ken Daryl Danos.

This kitchen renovation at the Fortaleza Residence is a story of continuity—where memory, material, and modern living converge. More than a functional upgrade, the project became an opportunity to honor the past while shaping a kitchen designed for present-day life. Meticulously designed by Arch. Erl John and brought to life by the KAHA Modular Construction team led by Arch. Ken Daryl Danos, the space reflects a careful balance between heritage and contemporary design.

At the heart of the project is its most meaningful material choice: Narra wood cabinetry panels, reclaimed from the client’s ancestral home. Rather than replacing history, the design preserved it—transforming solid hardwood that once held generations of stories into a new architectural expression. Each panel carries natural variations in grain and tone, allowing the kitchen to feel grounded, authentic, and unmistakably Filipino.

The design unfolds around a generously proportioned kitchen island, conceived as both a working surface and a communal centerpiece. Wrapped in warm wood and capped with a clean, stone-finished countertop, the island anchors the space visually while supporting daily cooking, conversation, and gathering. Above it, a series of globe pendant lights introduce rhythm and softness, counterbalancing the linear precision of the cabinetry and slatted wood feature wall.

Surrounding cabinetry was designed with restraint, allowing the Narra wood to take center stage. Glass-front upper cabinets add lightness and visual depth, while integrated storage solutions ensure the kitchen remains highly functional without disrupting its calm composition. Subtle lighting was layered beneath cabinetry and along work surfaces, enhancing usability while gently revealing the textures of wood and stone.

What sets this project apart is not ornament, but intention. The kitchen feels warm without nostalgia, modern without detachment. It stands as a quiet statement on sustainable design—demonstrating how thoughtful reuse of materials can elevate both aesthetic and emotional value. In transforming reclaimed Narra into finely crafted cabinetry, KAHA helped the Fortaleza family carry a piece of their history forward, seamlessly woven into everyday life.
